The Self-sacrificsed Teacher

Translaled by Dr.Myint Myint San (YIOE)

August is the month of heavy rain s in Myanmar. Daw Sein Htay, aged 43, who was in the early months of pregnancy, is a primary school teacher at the Thank-Ka-La Basic Education High School situated in Ka-Wa Township, Bago Division. Due to its geographical location, Thank-Ka-La village is always surrounded by water in the rainy season and rivers and stream around the village flow rapidly and forcefully. Children from neighbouring villages come to school by boat and those from Thank-Ka-La village have to find land routes to walk to school. To reach the school, children have to cross a bridge which is eighteen feet above the stream and situated in front of the school.

On August 11, 2003, an unforeseen incident occurred at the school. On that day at about 11:45 am, two six years old school girls fell through the handrail of the bridge into the stream which flowing with a strong current and they were immediately submerged deep in the water. The on-duty staff and students who saw the accident called for help. Daw Sein Htay had just finished her work and was getting ready to go home for lunch. She heard a loud sound “Bamb" followed by cries for help. As soon as she realized the situation, she could not think of anything else, except that she has to rescue the girls. Although she was aware of danger to herself, especially that she was pregnant, she jumped into the stream and held the girls tightly and swam with determination to reach the bank of the stream.

During the rescue effort, she sprained her ankle. However, she continued to give them first aid treatment until they gained consciousness. By the time the girls were safe, she was too exhausted and could hardly move. Daw Kyin San, a vendor nearby helped her in the rescue work. Daw Sein Htay, was awarded the Outstanding Teacher. Prize by the Ministry of Education on 5 October 2004, the World Teachers' Day. Daw Sein Htay, who has delivered a healthy baby, remarked that “I just did what a teacher should do."
