The president of France, François Hollande, has congratulated Burma’s opposition leader and apparent election winner Aung San Suu Kyi “for her decisive role in the progress of democracy in Myanmar, which must be pursued.”
According to a statement by the French embassy in Rangoon, President Hollande telephoned Suu Kyi on Wednesday.
“He welcomed the successful conduct of the campaign and of the elections and congratulated Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi for her decisive role in the progress of democracy in Myanmar, which must be pursued,” the statement said.
“The President recalled that France was still paying close attention to the respect of the will of the people of Myanmar, to the easing of political and religious tensions and to the pursuit of national reconciliation as desired by Mrs Aung San Suu Kyi. The commitments made in this regard must be respected.”
This morning, US president Barack Obama called his Burmese counterpart Thein Sein to congratulate him for “successfully implementing historic free and fair elections” in Burma, according to Information Minister Ye Htut.
With results still coming in, the NLD now has an unassailable lead in both Houses of Parliament.
Eyes are now trained on the desired majority of 67 percent, which would give the NLD an overall majority in the Union Parliament.
Suu Kyi’s party currently sits on 196 Lower House seats and 95 Upper House wins, for a total of 291. It must reach 327 seats to capture the all-important 67 percent majority.
